(really) Welcoming 2008 / Journal Entry: Mon Dec 31, 2007, 10:38 AM

Happy New Year to all you guys at DA. In advance, from Singapore, especially to those within time zones that are hours later to 2008. I hope you do well to make the best of 07's final moments. Then, warmly welcome a fresh tomorrow of 12 months.

However, as positive as it may sound, 'Happy' does not mean perfection. Just as 'safe' does not translate as '100% free from danger'. Oh, you know so much well as I do. Just read the papers, any fools get the idea. For the next 12 months, government dictatorships will continue to silence the dissenting voices of freedom, as we had seen in the cases of North Korea and more recently, Burma. Natural disasters will suddenly overhwhelm unsuspecting populations and something of Katrina's proportion may just be coming around the corner. Viral infection, a threat which knows no boundaries, will once again spark off another outbreak (followed by countless panics) and you better pray, if you do believe in God, that it does not become a global pandemic. You ask me, why all these negativities ? But has it not been true of our troubled world history ? After last week's assasination Of Benazir Bhutto, what does this remind you of ? The simple truth that bad things do happen and most of the time.... it's out of our control.

Don't go wishing for world peace in 2008. Seriously, it will never come. Until the Hitlers, Stalins and Kim Jongs are done away with, you can forget that for infinite milleniums. Or having vain hopes that your government will have a change of heart. Where I am, prices and living expenses are on the rise and our dear Head Of State (aka the Prime Minister, NOT the President. We're talking Singapore here) is getting more than a million of annual pay (beat that, Bush). Is there a possibility for actual reform ? It's a miracle that's hard to imagine.

However, don't take this as a verdict for the whole course of your life. Sunshine or rain, Al Qaeda or global warming, each one of you will relentlessly shine on..... only if you have the heart and make the effort regardless the craps of the world. You need not have to fall out of grace like Britney. Or die young like Anna Nicole. Sure you have to go through the trouble, planning and working but at the end, you are commiting yourself to all things good with passion and an undying zeal. Which is better than rotting away at your TV, watching reruns of 'reality' shows.

Hear this: don't wait on others to improve the world. The day might come when our leaders will fail us. And in the meantime, what will you do? Sit around and wait for gold to fall from the sky ? No, you step out and make a positive difference.

That's how the world, though not any better, gets better cos of you.

Nobody's perfect and many forms of tragedies may have to happen in the next 12 months. And you will keep moving still. For a brighter future and for the good of your fellow men.

Happy 2008.
